Obed Temba Tuyumvire

Conservation Leader in Eastern Congo | Founder of Kumbukumbu Tours | Advocate for Sustainable Tourism in Central Africa

My name is Obed Temba.

I was born in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in a region known for both extraordinary beauty and prolonged instability. My life’s work has grown from that landscape.

Today I work at the intersection of eco-tourism, community development, and Congo Basin forest conservation. I believe that sustainable tourism in Central Africa can strengthen local livelihoods while protecting endangered wildlife and high-carbon forests.

If you are looking for a thoughtful partner in conservation, ethical travel, or community-based development in eastern Congo, you are welcome here.

About Obed Temba

I grew up in eastern DRC and experienced displacement during years of conflict in the region. Those experiences shaped how I understand resilience, land, and responsibility.

When I began working in tourism, I quickly saw that eco-tourism in the Congo Basin could be more than travel. It could support peace, create jobs, and protect critical wildlife habitat.

Over time, that understanding led me to found Kumbukumbu Tours, a tour company operating across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and to co-found the Congo Rainforest Fund, which supports forest protection and community conservation initiatives in eastern Congo.

My work is guided by one principle: conservation must benefit the people who live closest to the forest.

What I Do

ECO-TOURISM IN CENTRAL AFRICA

Founder & CEO – Kumbukumbu Tours

Through Kumbukumbu Tours, we organize responsible travel experiences across Central and East Africa, including:

  • Gorilla trekking in the Virunga region

  • Volcano hikes and rainforest expeditions

  • Cultural immersion experiences

  • Multi-country tours across Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC

Our focus is ethical tourism. That means fair wages, local partnerships, environmental awareness, and careful attention to safety.

Tourism in eastern Congo and the greater Congo Basin must be built slowly and responsibly. When done correctly, it provides income that reduces pressure on forests and supports conservation efforts.

CONGO BASIN CONSERVATION

Co-Founder – Congo Rainforest Fund

The Congo Basin is the planet’s most important carbon sink in terms of net CO₂ captured. Eastern DRC contains critical habitat for Grauer’s gorillas, forest elephants, chimpanzees, and thousands of endemic species.

Through the Congo Rainforest Fund, we work alongside local communities and in partnership with Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) to:

  • Strengthen community forest governance

  • Remove snares and reduce poaching

  • Support agroforestry and alternative livelihoods

  • Protect intact forest landscapes near Itombwe and surrounding regions

Our conservation model in eastern Congo connects biodiversity protection with community income generation. Forest protection cannot succeed without economic stability.

COMMUNITY-BASED DEVELOPMENT IN EASTERN DRC

Much of eastern Congo depends on subsistence agriculture and charcoal production. These activities are understandable responses to poverty, but they increase deforestation in sensitive ecosystems.

Our work focuses on practical alternatives:

  • Agroforestry systems that combine coffee, cacao, and native shade trees

  • Community forest concessions

  • Youth employment in conservation

  • Tourism-linked income opportunities

The goal is long-term stability. Forests remain standing when families have other options.

Projects

Responsible eco-tourism in Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC

Community-led conservation in the Congo Basin

A future-facing initiative designed to responsibly reintroduce the Democratic Republic of Congo to international travelers through conservation-based tourism.

Partnerships & Experience

My work has included collaboration with:

  • Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN)

  • The Visit Rwanda campain

  • NomadMania platform

  • Local environmental authorities in North and South Kivu

  • Community leaders in forest-adjacent villages

  • International travelers seeking ethical experiences in Central Africa

I have guided expeditions in remote rainforest regions and worked on conservation strategies that balance climate protection, biodiversity, and community well-being.

Trust and long-term relationships are central to how I operate.

Speaking & Thought Leadership

I speak about:

  • Sustainable tourism in post-conflict regions

  • Gorillas in the war

  • Community-based climate solutions

  • Congo Basin Conservation

  • Youth leadership in eastern DRC

My approach is careful and considered. I value dialogue more than performance.

Philosophy

Tourism should protect what it depends on.

Conservation must include the people who live closest to the forest.

The Congo Basin is not only a global climate asset. It is home. Its future will be shaped by steady partnerships, local leadership, and responsible investment.

I try to bring patience and seriousness to every project I join.

Kumbukumbu

A story from the heart of the Congo

Obed Temba Tuyumvire is not only a conservationist and entrepreneur. He is also a storyteller.

His book, Kumbukumbu: Running from the Dark Tracks of the Virunga Mountains, is a powerful narrative rooted in the realities of life in Central Africa.

It follows the journey of a young Congolese refugee navigating displacement, identity, and survival against the backdrop of conflict and uncertainty.

At its core, Kumbukumbu is about memory, resilience, and the human spirit. It brings readers closer to the lived experiences behind the landscapes, the people, and the mission that drive Obed’s work today.

This is not just a story. It is a window into a world few truly understand.
